Are we pro-PR?

Toxic_sludge_3 PR Watch characterises PR blogs as either pro- or (by implication) anti-PR. Well, we know where they're coming from. But it's an unsophisticated view to take since PR academics tend to be critical thinkers - many of my colleagues use Stauber and Rampton's Toxic Sludge is Good For You! in their teaching. And every PR blogger I can think of (there's a long list of them on the right hand column of this page) is driven by a desire to improve the practice and professionalism of public relations.

Public relations has a function in a consumer democracy that need not be malign. Besides, it's ubiquitous (practised by governments, businesses, charities, campaigning organisations, publishers and individuals). Would you characterise anyone as being pro- or anti-air? Do you recognise that everyone has an interest in ensuring we have clean air to breathe. (Clean Air is Good For You! - not such a good title for a bestseller, though.)
