Where's the web?

In a talk today at a Leeds school and in a lecture last week to our first year students, I asked how many had created their own websites. Only one person responded positively.

I wanted to tell them all that this was their generation's technology, their chance to shout to the world (and to find if anyone was listening). It seems ironic that it's people who've worked in big media (ie Dan Gillmor) and print publishing (I once worked as a typesetter) who are the advocates of new media.

If you're not yet 20, it must seem that Windows and the web have been around for ever, and are already old technologies. But technology isn't interesting in itself, only in its uses. Put it to work! Push the boundaries!
